The culmination of the partnership was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement last week between the two organisations.
GreenCard chief executive Mr Simon Tapfumaneyi and CBTAZ president Mr Killer Zivhu signed on behalf of their respective organisations.
Mr Tapfumaneyi said the “Emergency Package” is meant to avert the loss of lives that typically result from late medical back-up following road accidents.
“Cross-border traders are by definition frequent travellers and previously there had been no specific plan which catered for medical intervention in the event of accidents.
“The growing relevance of the informal sector in our economy clearly calls for products and services that cater for their specific needs and this partnership is a manifestation of GreenCard’s commitment to offer flexible, affordable and convenient services to the hitherto marginalised sector,” he said.
The medical firm has also indicated that although the package is strictly for emergency cases, CBTAZ members were, however, free to get more comprehensive coverage at reasonable rates.
With the unemployment rate high in the country, a significant percentage of the population has turned to informal cross-border trade for self-sustenance, and the CBTAZ has been active in trying to improve the conditions of operation and livelihoods of its membership.
The GreenCard “Emergency Package” is complimentary to the funeral policy coverage that CBTAZ has for its members.
