Hunt For Greatness
Milton Kamwendo
DARE to grow regardless of where you are and what you are going through.
The path to growth is often not by force. It is by agility. The future belongs to you. It is not only a preserve of the strong and endowed.
It belongs to the strategically smart.
That is why you must draw lessons from an unusual, but powerful source: judo. This is the martial art of leverage, stability and movement.
Harvard professors David Yoffie and Mary Kwak introduced the judo strategy in their 2001 book titled “Judo Strategy: Turning Your Competitors’ Strength to Your Advantage”.
You grow and win by strategy, not mere size or force. A small judo fighter wins against a stronger opponent by using technique rather than force. You also can win and grow by being nimble, smart and strategic. Do not despise your size or present position. You have a lot of power and potential.
Heart of judo strategy
The judo strategy offers an elegant way for small players to compete with giants. You do this not by meeting them head-on.
Instead, you dance around them. You deftly use their size and momentum to gain ground. Growth and winning is never about size. It is about agility, speed and timing. The strategy is built around three powerful principles:
Movement: Stay flexible and avoid direct confrontation.
Balance: Control your own growth and momentum, avoiding provoking the giants.
Leverage: Use your opponent’s strength and weaknesses to your advantage.
It is not just what you know that matters but how you use it.
- Movement: Be fast, flexible and focused
In judo, the first rule is to keep moving. If you stand still, you become an easy target. To grow, stay agile. Move into market gaps quickly. Adapt faster than your competitors. Speed is your asset and strategic growth weapon. Keep moving. Do not let bureaucracy, hierarchy or outdated processes slow you down. Unleash the weapon of speed and agility. Pivot quickly. Spot trends early and rush ahead. Capture niche opportunities that others ignore. Choose your focus and move.
Movement means being first, fast and focused. Enter spaces early. Serve overlooked customers or segments. Build brand loyalty before the big players wake up. Wake up while others are asleep. Do while others are planning. Move while others are waiting. Execute while others are planning.
- Balance: Grow without provoking
Balance is about managing your own actions. This ensures that you do not awaken a sleeping giant too early. In judo, if you push too hard, you lose your own balance. You then risk being crushed. Balance keeps you grounded and stable.
As you grow, it is tempting to make noise, claim territory and shout success. Wisdom is learning to grow under the radar. Build quietly. Strengthen your capability and infrastructure. Avoid unnecessary attention from incumbents. Keep a clear mind and balance.
Growing too fast and too loud makes you vulnerable to attack. Grow in a smart manner. Learn to coexist, collaborate and partner.
Keep your balance and your level head. This will help you in your growth. You have nothing to show. Let growth be your priority.
Balance means knowing when to grow and how to do so. Practise strategic patience. There is a Ndebele proverb that speaks to this principle: “Inhlwa kayibanjwa ngekhanda” (An edible flying termite is not caught by its head). This means you must handle situations wisely and strategically. Do not approach situations recklessly or from the wrong angle. Growth and success come through tact, technique and understanding. Shun brute force or careless action as these cause you to be unbalanced.
In traditional Ndebele culture, an edible flying termite (inhlwa) is delicate. Grabbing it quickly by the head would either kill it or cause it to escape. You must instead catch it from the right place, often from behind, using care and speed. Balance is the key to growth.
- Leverage: Use your opponent’s strength
This is the essence of judo. You do not fight strength with strength. Instead, you redirect your opponent’s strength and force.
Transform your opponent’s energy. When stones are thrown at you, use them to build. Use your incumbent’s size, structure and inflexibility against them. Use your tests to become a testimonial. Use your advantage and your momentum. Where you see delay, move fast. Where you see mediocrity, deliver excellence. Where you see stagnation, move with speed. Where you see rigidity, be flexible. Upend the rules set by those who feel entitled.
Leverage means thinking smarter, not harder. Use what others have built, for instance, platforms, trust and awareness. Introduce something leaner, faster and closer to the customer. Think leverage. Innovate and disrupt.
The challenges of life are not for the faint-hearted. Choose to be resilient and innovative. Believe in greatness and possibilities. Be strategic, patient and bold. Embrace the judo strategy. The strategy offers a low-cost, high-impact pathway to growth. It is not about having everything. Use what you have intelligently. Be resourceful and creative. Keep at the task and do not be afraid.
In judo and in life, victory comes through positioning, timing and intent. Do not wait for the perfect moment. Start small. Move fast. Think smart. Grow wisely. Avoid unnecessary battles. Focus on value, service and impact.
Yoffie and Kwak said it well: “Judo teaches us to use the force of others as a tool — not to destroy, but to redirect and prevail.”
Rise not just with strength, but with strategic grace. The future belongs to the agile.
Committed to your greatness.
