Hunt For Greatness
Milton Kamwendo
JOHN C. MAXWELL once said: “You cannot lead others until you can lead yourself.”
In the same vein, Stephen Covey said private victory precedes public victory.
Leadership is not just pomp, position or perks.
Leadership begins within.
It is the conscious choice to take responsibility and ownership of your thoughts, decisions, emotions and destiny.
This is the essence of self-leadership.
It is the ability to intentionally influence your own life towards growth, excellence and purpose.
Self-leadership is the anchor that keeps you grounded, resilient and purpose-driven. Growing through self-leadership means developing the habits, mindset and emotional awareness necessary to become the best version of yourself.
As you grow, so does your influence.
Your growth ultimately touches many others beyond your wildest dreams.
Self-leadership
Heather R. Younger, in her transformative work, “The Art of Self-Leadership”, defines self-leadership as the ability to recognise your responsibility to lead your own life.
It involves intentionality, personal accountability and a deep understanding of who you are and what you value.
Self-leadership is not reactive — It is proactive.
It does not wait for circumstances to improve.
It does not just read the temperature. It acts as a thermostat.
Self-leadership initiates change. It builds momentum.
Self-leadership intentionally shapes the future with clarity and conviction.
You grow through self-leadership when you stop blaming others and start becoming the author of your own story.
In self-leadership, you are the “penholder”.
Self-leadership matters
Without self-leadership, talent remains dormant.
Goals are deferred and potential is wasted. When self-leadership is cultivated, you develop clarity of purpose. You maintain discipline in the face of distraction.
You recover quickly from setbacks. You influence others through your example and the way you show up.
Greatness is about taking personal responsibility. No one can lead you to your greatness more effectively than yourself.
Your growth requires your effort. Your greatness calls for your decision-making. Growth requires focus, discipline and endurance.
Embrace the ARC method
Heather Younger introduces the ARC method of goal setting as a framework for personal growth and achievement. In her work:
- A stands for aspirational vision. You first start by envisioning your desired future state or outcome.
- R stands for realistic pathways. Once you come up with the aspirational vision, you need to break it down into realistic pathways and strategies for achievement.
- C stands for continuous adaptation. In this step, you embrace a mindset of continuous adaptation and flexibility as you work towards your goal.
In self-leadership, consider another view to “ARC” as standing for accountability, reflection and consistency.
These are three pillars that help you sustain momentum in self-leadership.
Accountability
Accountability is the willingness to own your goals and decisions. Stop thinking like a victim or talking like one. Accountability is being answerable to yourself and sometimes to others for your progress or lack thereof. Do not let yourself off the hook and excuse your tardiness.
Ask yourself: Am I showing up for myself? Who or what have I allowed to delay my growth? Embrace accountability. Silence the voice of excuses and empower the voice of bold action.
Reflection
Reflection is the pause that allows you to learn from experience. It is not about regret but about awareness. It is learning from experience and growing.
Make it a regular practice to ask: What is working? What is hindering my growth? Where can I adjust my strategy?
Reflection keeps you connected to your values, your “why” and your inner voice. Reflection changes failure into learning. It turns experience into wisdom. It transforms mistakes into stepping stones. It crystallises success into systems.
Consistency
Consistency is the secret ingredient to sustainable growth. Greatness does not happen in a day, but daily growth leads you there. It is not what you do occasionally that transforms your life. Growth comes through consistency. You have to keep pushing the flywheel.
Consistent action, however small, always outperforms occasional bursts of motivation. Stick to the knitting and keep growing.
Growth habits
To grow through self-leadership requires you to take simple but consistent actions. Here are practical disciplines you can start building today:
- Set clear personal values — Know what matters most. Let your values drive your priorities. Write your values down and reflect on them often.
- Establish morning rituals — Begin your day intentionally. It could be with prayer, reading, gratitude or planning. Always begin with the end in mind.
- Track your habits and progress — What gets measured gets improved. Review your goals daily and weekly. Keep a journal or diary. See what is working and what you need to change. Identify growth steps that you need to take.
- Learn to say no — Focus is the friend of purpose. Guard your time and energy. Strengthen your ability to say “No”. Your ability to say “No” strengthens you and grows you.
- Ask for feedback — Feedback is a gift. Expect it, invite it and accept it. Do not defend yourself. Use it to improve yourself. Self-leadership is humble. Others often see what you do not see.
- Celebrate small wins — Progress fuels motivation. Every step counts.
- Rest and recharge — Burnout is not a badge of honour. Self-leadership includes rest and reflection. Rest is as important as work.
Architecting your growth
Growing through self-leadership means taking your life off autopilot. Step into the role of active steward. Be intentional. Be accountable.
Be reflective and consistent. Follow through and embrace the discipline of getting things done. Translate dreams into actions and plans into results.
Do not wait to be prodded, promoted or pushed. Take the lead in your own life. Set your goals. Reflect on your progress. Show up every day.
You were created to grow. Your growth begins with self-leadership.
Committed to your greatness.
