A SECURITY guard stationed at Sheni Primary School in Dangamvura, Mutare, lost a finger during a brave fight with the six armed robbers who had pounced on the learning institution in a foiled robbery attempt.

Thanks Mupombwa (41) confronted the assailants who had jumped the school’s precast wall last Friday night at around 11pm.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda, confirmed the incident and said the complainant lost a finger after one of the robbers discharged a firearm that hit his hand.

“The complainant was conducting his duties at the school when the six suspects arrived and wrestled with him. One of the accused persons shot the complainant with an unknown type of rifle on the left hand. The complainant’s little finger was cut off and it fell to the ground. During the melee, the robbers also hit the complainant with an unknown object on the back of the head,” he said.

The assailants then shot several shots into the air as they fled from the scene.

“A report was made at ZRP Dangamvura, while Mupombwa was referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for medical attention. He is currently admitted there. No arrests have been made so far,” said Inspector Chananda.

Police detectives attended the crime scene and saw bloodstains all over the verandah and the walls of a classroom block. The detectives also recovered the guard’s finger from a pavement. It was collected as evidence and for examination purposes.

Inspector Chananda said the crime was an organised attack executed by well trained criminals.
