ZBCTV’s new drama series “Guluva” has captured the attention of viewers largely due to its non-stop action and slap-stick humour.
The drama series which is still in the first quarter of its run has got viewers glued to the small screens as each episode unfolds packed with suspense and riveting twists. According to some critics at times the prevalence of violence is quite disturbing. However, that is hardly surprising since the drama series was shot on site at Khami prison with most of the cast members being inmates except for four prison officers.
The drama revolves around the same script as two successful dramas such as “Sakamuzi” and “Amakorokoza” where the cast use both local languages Shona and isiNdebele on the set and yet viewers still understand the gist of the show.
“Guluva” is more of action packed and it engages viewers from start to finish. For a long time there hasn’t anything quite like it since “Sakamuzi” and “Amakorokoza”.
“Guluva” was written by Ornwell Siziba, co-produced by Sikhangele Ngwenya and Praise Shoko. According to the synopsis, the television drama serious is about a young man who impregnates his girlfriend Thembi.
Afraid of responsibility he flees to Bulawayo where he joins Thula Mabotho, a notorious criminal. Apparently a war erupts between the two and they later discovered that they were brothers. How the two uncover the secret is what keeps viewers glued to the screen.
For those not in the know, “Guluva” is part of a partnership between ZBCTV and Zimbabwe Prison Services aimed at rehabilitation and re-admission of prisoners.
ZBC head productions and television services Clifford Mufiri, said although they were still to ascertain the popularity of the drama series, the response so far was overwhelming.
“We enjoy cordial relations with the ZPS and ‘Guluva’ is one such production to emerge from that partnership. As a national broadcaster we work hand in hand with the ZPS in the rehabilitation of prisoners. We are hopeful that some of the cast members will pursue acting as a career once they are out.
“We have had enquiries from interested sponsors and other people about the drama which is encouraging. With regards to its popularity we will know once a survey id conducted.
All the scenes that you see were taken from Khame prison except for a few scenes which were shot outside prison. The drama series was done by ZBCTV production crew,” Mufiri said.
He said the second season of the drama series will be coming soon on a small screen near you.
Catch “Guluva” on ZBCTV every Saturday starting at 1900 hours with a repeat during the week.
