SOCIAL media users have been debating whether or not a divorce token (gupuro) is critical when one decides to remarry.
The debate was triggered by H-Metro’s publication of a story of a woman, who got married to another man, while her customary marriage was still subsisting.
Following our story, socialite and social media influencer, Zuva Urban Tete, posted on her Facebook page asking for views from people.
She wanted views on our story, in which Tinashe Murimba is accusing his wife, Elizabeth Chihota, of ditching him for another man, without giving him a divorce token.
Tinashe insists Elizabeth remains his wife until he is presented with a divorce token.
Elizabeth married another man, Freddy Dzoya, after she had told Tinashe verbally that it was over.
She said there was no divorce token and there was nothing wrong with that. However, Zuva’s post attracted mixed feelings.
She posted: “Pane Nyaya yandaona mukufamba. This lady is Elizabeth Chihota who was married to Tinashe for six years.
“Three months ago, Elizabeth visited Zim and her best friend Patricia Machacha and Patricia’s then boyfriend Freddy Dzoya (car dealer) invited her for drinks.
“Long story short, 3 months ago Elizabeth started dating her best friend’s man Freddy and married him this past weekend.
“Patricia is crying and feeling betrayed kuti Elizabeth akanditorera munhu wangu.
Tinashe is crying kuti Elizabeth married another man but we are still married hapana Gupuro randakamupa.
“Freddy is ignoring all the red flags, just happy azviwanira bleachmore rake.
“And Elizabeth . . . Well Elizabeth says she broke up naTinashe but he (Tinashe) didn’t get the memo.
“My question is . . . ‘If there was No Gupuro presented from either of these two Tinashe or Elizabeth — Does it mean the marriage was still valid? Pasina gupuro muchato uchiripo here?
