Gwanda abuzz with activity

Although no big names come to the town often entertainment wise, residents of Gwanda feel that they have enough to get them by.

Chronicle Entertainment took time to speak to residents of Gwanda at the three entertainment spots to find out what they think of entertainment in the town.

A small scale miner Japhet Dube said in his opinion Riverdance Night Club was the most happening place in town. He said the who’s who of the town would be found at the place.

“Riverdance Night Club is the place to be on the weekend. When I get my money from my gold, I set aside and spend $100 on a given night. The ladies will be looking beautiful and the beer will be cold,” said Dube.

He said people thought Gwanda was sleepy because big stars such as Macheso, Dan Tshanda and the like did not come to the town often.

“These stars baphelela Esigodini and they hardly or do not come to Gwanda. Maybe that is why people think we are a sleepy town, but we have fun,” said Dube.

He said last month 3 Kings from Bulawayo, of the Seqamabhilidi fame, came to Riverdance Night Club and they had the time of their lives.

“It was packed and those guys put up a great performance, zazisiwa. They kept us dancing the whole night and such acts should come,” said Dube.

His friend Mthokozisi Ndebele said for him, Phakama was the place to be.

He said he enjoyed Jeys Marabini’s performances at the place earlier on in the year.

“When I have money I go there because the place is my favourite. Phakama has a relaxed atmosphere and that is what I like. The only thing that we might lack is super stars. I think if Macheso, Jeys and Chase would hold a show in Gwanda we will definitely throng the place,” said Ndebele.

When Chronicle Entertainment visited Riverdance Night Club situated at the complex, men and women were milling around the place waiting to enter.

Revellers said there was nothing special on offer but this was the place to be on a Saturday night.

They said Bulawayo DJs sometimes come to the joint and that would be a highlight during that weekend.

“We are here to have fun and as you can see the place is going to be packed later on in the night. Sometimes Joe the OG from Bulawayo comes to do his thing here and we want him and other DJs to come and bring more spice to the town. Otherwise we are always having fun on weekends and we shall continue doing so,” said Silindile Ngwenya, who was spoting a tight fitting light blue short dress, with matching high heels.

She said it would be good for the town to have South African artistes performing there such as Zahara and DJs Fresh, Cleo, Clock, Zinhle and Tira.

After leaving Riverdance Night Club the news crew visited Mantengwane and found a different scene there.

Revellers who were outside the place said they enjoy having Chase Skuza there often and thanked the owners of the place.

They wondered where the notion came from that the town was sleepy entertainment wise.

“We do not know what people mean by this town being sleepy. I do not think so, as you can see we are here to braai and have fun and drink a lot of beer. Isn’t that what should be found at an entertainment joint — music, beer, women and braai?” said a man who only identified himself as Zondo.

As the news crew left it was clear that the only entertainment that Gwanda was starved of was that of regional and international artistes. The town has its own way to entertain its residents.
