Gwanda man gets three years for cellphone, cash theft

A 22-YEAR-OLD Gwanda man has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for stealing a cellphone and R2 000.

‎Casper Ndlovu (22) of West Nicholson was convicted on his own plea of guilty to robbery and theft of a cell phone by Gwanda magistrate, Mr Progress Murandu.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, of which nine months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.

Three months were further suspended on condition he restitutes R1700 to the complainant.
Ndlovu will serve an effective two-year sentence.‎

Prosecuting, Ms Mercy Nyathi said Ndlovu committed the offence on May 10, 2025, at around 1600hrs, at Sherborne Resettlement, West Nicholson.

“The complainant in this matter is Mr Surelet Dube a male aged 18 years, also from West Nicholson. The accused person and complainant are not related. The accused person who was holding a stone approached complainant who was on his way home and ordered him to stop.

“The accused grabbed the complainant by the waist belt and took his gold Itel A70 cellphone. ‎ ‎He went on to search the complainant and took R2000 from his wallet which was in the pocket. The accused dropped the wallet on the ground, and ordered Mr Dube to proceed with his journey and never look back,” he said.

Ms Nyathi said complainant narrated the incident to his employer who advised him to report the matter to ZRP West Nicholson.

Investigations were conducted leading to the arrest of the accused person and recovery of complainant’s gold Itel A70 cellphone and R300.
