THE City of Gweru has identified several suburbs as the hardest hit by recurring sewer bursts and has appealed to residents to stop disposing of inappropriate waste into the sewer system.

In a statement, City of Gweru spokesperson Ms Vimbai Chingwaramusee said Senga Area 1, Senga Area 2, Nehosho, Ascot Infill, Ascot Extension, Athlone (particularly Athlone Flats), Mkoba 14, Mtapa, Mambo, Woodlands 1 and 2, and KMP are experiencing frequent sewer bursts.

She said the incidents are largely being caused by blockages resulting from residents flushing unsuitable items into the sewer network.

“This situation poses a serious health hazard to our communities, damages our environment and places a heavy financial burden on council resources that could otherwise be directed towards improving service delivery.

“We are therefore appealing to all residents for urgent cooperation,” reads the statement.

To help prevent further blockages and reduce sewer bursts, the city urged residents to refrain from flushing sanitary ware, diapers, wipes, paper towels, newspapers, cardboard, cooking oil, grease, fats, plastic bags, bottle tops and glass, food scraps and solid waste, clothing, rags, mops, chemicals, paint and solvents down their toilets.

“Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Our sewer system is a shared resource,” the council said.

“Its proper functioning depends on the cooperation of every resident. We urge you to take responsibility for what goes down your drains.
