FIVE suspended Gweru councillors have appeared before a tribunal to answer to allegations of gross misconduct, incompetence and mismanagement levelled against them.
The five are part of the 16 councillors who were suspended by the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere last month.
The tribunal’s chairperson Luxon Chikumbirike told The Chronicle that the hearings had started and was hopeful to complete the exercise in the stipulated 45 days.
“The tribunal has started proceedings and five councillors have since appeared before the tribunal,” said Chikumbirike.
He however declined to name the councillors that have so far appeared before the tribunal.
Chikumbirike accused some councillors of trying to delay the process.
A commission led by former Masvingo Town Clerk, Tsunga Mhangami is running the affairs of the city following the suspension of the 13 MDC-T and three Zanu PF councillors.
Cde Kasukuwere suspended the 16 councillors including the mayor Hamutendi Kombayi and his deputy Artwell Manyorauta in August on allegations of gross misconduct, incompetence and mismanagement.
The suspensions came after an audit conducted by the ministry whose results are yet to be made public.
