A Gweru man was found hanging from a tree in Mtapa suburb, police have confirmed. Relatives of the deceased man suspect the man could have cut his life short owing to some financial challenges. Acting Midlands police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende, confirmed the incident which happened on Sunday afternoon.
“We are investigating a sudden death by hanging where a male adult was found hanging from a tree branch. The incident occurred at around 2PM in a bushy area near Isolation Hospital, Mtapa, here in Gweru,” she said.
Insp Mukwende identified the deceased as Austin Zimete, 44, of House Number 299 Macebo Road, Ascot. She said the now deceased had disappeared from home and a search party composed mainly of relatives, was dispatched.
The body was discovered by a neighbour, Sipho Sithole, who was part of the search party.
“Sithole immediately informed Zimete’s relatives. The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene,” she said.
Insp Mukwende said relatives suspected Zimete killed himself because he failed to clear his debts.
“The relatives alleged that on a previous occasion, the now deceased had attempted to hang himself over issues of debts he was failing to pay. They strongly believe the situation had worsened leading to Zimete’s suicide,” she said.
