A DARK cloud fell over Gweru on Sunday following the death of prominent educationist Mr Luckson Degwa, founder and owner of Progress Christian College. He succumbed to a short illness.

Family spokesperson Mr Forbes Degwa, the younger brother of the late educationist, confirmed the untimely death.

“I can confirm the death of Mr Degwa last night (Sunday). Most people in Gweru know him as the founder of Progress Christian College. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” he said.

A teacher by profession, Mr Degwa was born in 1963 in Buhera’s Chitsunge area and worked as a teacher in Mberengwa, Lower Gweru and Gweru, where he taught at Matinunura High School before retiring in 2007.

He went on to establish Progress Christian College and later constructed a school in Mkoba 14. Recently, Mr Degwa had completed a boarding facility at the institution.

He is survived by his wife, Mucha Degwa, three children and four grandchildren.

“Mourners are gathered at his plot in Lingfield, Gweru,” said Mr Forbes Degwa.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed a fatal road traffic accident in which a cyclist and his passenger were hit by a motor vehicle along the Gweru-Mvuma Road.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the accident occurred on December 21 around 6.30PM at the 45km peg in Gweru.

“Tafara Kachembere (41) of Glenwood, Harare, was driving a black Nissan Caravan motor vehicle along the road, heading towards Gweru,” he said.

At the 45km peg, Insp Mahoko said Kachembere allegedly hit a cyclist who was attempting to make a right turn to cross the road.

“The cyclist was carrying one passenger. Both the cyclist and his passenger fell on the tarred road and sustained serious head injuries,” he said.

Police attended the scene and the injured were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for medical assistance.

“The cyclist, Anesu Zimwenje, died upon admission, while the passenger, Simon Madunuza, is currently admitted at the hospital,” said Inspector Mahoko.
