Gweru runs dry

In an interview, the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Taurai Demo, said the disruption in water supplies was due to a breakdown of a pump at the city’s supply dam, Gwenoro.

Clr Demo said the entire city was expected to go without water for the whole of this week with the engineers expected to have completed repairs by Sunday.

“We have experienced a major breakdown at Gwenoro Dam and the repairs are going on.

“Our engineers are also repairing some filters at Gwenoro and the city will be without water for the whole week, we are expecting to have completed the repairs by Sunday,” he said.

Clr Demo said the water situation in the city was, however, expected to improve following the recent installation of another pump at Gwenoro.

He said there would be smooth water supplies as soon as the repairs have been completed.

Gweru has for the past five years been struggling to supply water to all the suburbs because of the constant break down of pumps at Gwenoro.

Council engineers said the city has been relying on two pumps out of a possible              six needed to pump adequate water to the city.

Water supplies have been erratic in some sections of the city which lie on high ground like Senga and Mkoba Village 19 for the past six years.

The water situation has been worsened by the fact that most of the city’s boreholes which were drilled to augment supplies have since broken down.
