Gweru had a dream start to the NRL when they beat Bulawayo side Panthers 15-14 at home on March 31 that was the last time they tasted victory.
They have lost 33-79 to Old Hararians, 7-35 to Warriors before they suffered a huge 7-62 beating at the hands of Harare Sports Club while Old Miltonians handed them a 13-25 defeat.
And tomorrow, they will be taking on defending champions Old Georgians at Gweru Sports Club.
Gweru eighth-man Lawrance Chikukura yesterday conceded that his side has failed to make the kind of impact they were hoping to bounce back into the league with.
“It hasn’t been what we expected as a team, we started off pretty good with a win over Panthers and put up a good fight against OH, who are a big team, but then things just went down unexpectedly.
“This was due to various reasons including injuries to some of our key players, secondly the immense pressure that comes with playing in the league, but as a team we have been working hard to regain the form that we had last year and early in the season.
“We just experiencing a lean spell and we keep on working hard and believing that we will soon be out of the woods, we want as much as possible to fulfil our target of finishing among the top five in the league,” said Chikukura.
Gweru were promoted into the league after putting a huge fight that saw them beat Old Hararians II home and away in the promotional play-offs but they have not been strong enough to hold on to the good start.
Some of the players that have been out due to injury in the Gweru camp include
Lock Eddy Muchenje, centres Kelvin Manyangadze and Charles Gwanzura who has been on and off, Cliffton Frankis (flyhalf) and flanker Zweelonke Mloiswa.
Last week Gweru were not in action and winger Kilvan Magunje was away with the Cheetahs who were taking part in the Glasgow and London Sevens final tournaments of the IRB calendar.
Chikukura knows that his side has to start picking up points if they are to remain in the league.
Fixtures
Tomorrow: Gweru Sports Club v Old Georgians (Gweru Sports Club 3pm), Airforce v Old Hararians (Manyame 3.30pm).
