Preparations are at an advanced stage for the inaugural H-Metro National Forum on Responsible Betting, scheduled to take place on July 12, 2025, at Alex Sports Club in Harare.

The event is being organised by H-Metro, a publication under Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Ltd, in partnership with the Lotteries and Gaming Board, Africabet, the Bookmakers Association, and Moors World of Sport (MWOS).

The forum is aimed at promoting responsible betting practices in the face of the rapid growth of the betting and gaming industry in Zimbabwe.

It is expected to provide a platform for dialogue among industry players, regulators, public health professionals, and other stakeholders on ways to address challenges such as betting addiction, underage betting, and regulatory gaps.

According to the organisers, the one-day forum will include keynote addresses, panel discussions, and breakout sessions on various topics.

These include the impact of technology on betting behaviour, consumer protection strategies, and the role of regulation in fostering ethical conduct within the industry.

Speaking ahead of the event, H-Metro Editor Robson Sharuko said the forum seeks to contribute meaningfully to efforts around responsible betting.

“We are excited to bring together industry stakeholders to discuss the importance of responsible betting.

“This forum will provide a platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, ultimately contributing to a safer and more accountable betting environment,” he said.

The event is expected to attract more than 100 participants, including representatives from regulatory authorities, the legal and medical fraternities, betting operators, and members of the public with an interest in the sector.

Zimpapers Public Relations and Events Manager Pauline Matanda said the initiative goes beyond dialogue and aims to produce actionable outcomes.

“This is more than a corporate gathering; it is a call to action.

“We are encouraging real conversations and practical commitments.

“As the industry continues to grow, ethical standards and social responsibility must remain central,” she said.

The forum will run under the theme: “Collaborate. Regulate. Rehabilitate.”

The theme underscores the need for joint efforts, enhanced regulatory compliance, and increased awareness on rehabilitation support for individuals affected by problem gambling.

The event will run from 9am to 4pm and is open to both industry professionals and members of the public. Organisers have encouraged interested participants to register early due to limited space.
