A 42-year-old Honde Valley man will spend the next 36 months behind bars after he was convicted of four counts of theft by a Mutare senior magistrate.

Cashmore Mureya pleaded guilty to contravening Section 113 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.

The court heard that on April 17 this year Mureya broke into Joseph Chishakwe’s house at around 11pm and stole kitchen utensils which included dinner plates, cups, blankets and some groceries valued at $100.

Asked on how he got into the house, Mureya said he used a metal object to force open the door.

Mr Donald Mudadirwa prosecuted. In her ruling Mrs Chigodora told him to stop stealing. She sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment with three months suspended on condition of good behaviour.

On count two, Mr Mudadirwa told the court that in April the accused also broke into Regis Mutengo’s premises and stole. Mureya told the court he stole the items for personal use.

He was sentenced to a further 12 months imprisonment, three of which were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

He also broke into Seram Seram’s house in Gwidibira Village and stole a sewing machine and blankets worth $200.

The following morning the complainant made a police report after he discovered that his belongings were missing leading to the arrest of Mureya. He was again sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, three of which were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

On the fourth count, he also got the same sentence.

“Desist from this behaviour because crime does not pay.” said Mrs Chiundura.
