FORMER Highway and Gunners midfielder, Willard Katsande, who traces his roots to Sakubva Primary School in Mutare, says the 2014/2015 season has been his best since he crossed the mighty Limpopo to ply his trade in the South African ABSA Premiership. Katsande was a vital cog in the Amakhosi outfit that won the 2014/2015 ABSA Premiership title, confirming their statute as the most successful club in South Africa. The Soweto giants sealed their fourth PSL championship (and 12th league title overall) when they crushed Polokwane City 4-1 at FNB Stadium.
Having amassed 68 trophies, Amakhosi are South Africa’s most successful club.
Chiefs could also make history by breaking Sundowns’ record of 65 points in a season last year as their victory over Polokwane City took them to 63 points with three games remaining.
For Katsande, this was the second league title with Kaiser Chiefs after featuring in the 2012/2013 season when Amakhosi also won the ABSA title while the former Highway FC and CPMZ Feruka player has also won two cup competitions — the Nedbank and MTN Cups.
“I have tasted it before and I know how sweet it is. That is why I have always been hungry for it,” he said in an interview from his South African base.
Katsande has featured in all the 24 league matches that his team has played so far out of the 27 matches of the ABSA Premiership season and he has also played in four Cup matches this season.
The soft-spoken Amakhosi anchorman told this publication that he had set sights on making his presence felt in the Kaiser Chiefs African safari.
“I think we now need to push hard in the CAF Champions League.
“My aim is to make my presence felt in that tournament.
“As a club we also want to try defending the league title and winning it back to back and possibly gun for another silverware – the Telkom Cup,” he added.
Katsande could neither confirm nor deny whether there are any foreign league clubs that are after his signature.
