THRILLS, speed, and endurance came alive as Hamish Perry reigned supreme during the Tiger Wheel & Tyre 1-Hour Endurance Race at Donnybrook Park Raceway in Harare on Sunday.
On a sunny day, the iconic home of local motorsport — Donnybrook Raceway — burst into life on Sunday as Tiger Wheel & Tyre hosted the second round of the 2026 National Racing Season.
Motor racing drivers travelled from afar to compete, and it was Bulawayo drivers Kevin Steenkamp and Angelo Tavares who finished second and third, respectively, in the Turbo Class.
They were unable to catch Gary Bluett, though, who survived a brush with the wall in practise to win the class in his Mitsubishi Evo.
The 2 000cc Saloon Class also featured a Bulawayo driver, with Quinton Holder finishing runner-up to Harare’s Onismo Mhute.
The 1 600cc Class was the most popular class, with Brett Olsen qualifying his Corolla on pole and taking two dominant victories ahead of Vernon Lapham and Steve Murton.
The crowd favourites were the Unlimited Saloon Cars, and they didn’t disappoint.
Hamish Perry powered to victory in his BMW, as veteran motor racing driver Richard “Mahobho” Robinson suffered clutch failure in his Supra Turbo.
Also having clutch problems was Jim Perry, who managed to nurse his BMW into 2nd place ahead of Des Morris.
Gary Kirk won both heats of the Sports Car class ahead of Maurizio Savo, while Ronnie Parsell completed a last-minute rebuild of his Super 7 after heavy contact with the wall in practice.
Motorcycle demonstrations and a Classic Car parade kept the large crowd entertained, while Hamish Perry terrified members of the public with passenger rides in his Turbo BMW before the main race of the day — the 1-Hour Endurance Race — started.
Nineteen cars from all classes tussled for over 47 laps, and with heavy attrition, Hamish Perry emerged victorious.
After the smoke cleared, Kevin Steenkamp crossed the line in 2nd place, ahead of Jim Perry.
Hamish Perry was simply irresistible. He came out with all his guns blazing as he swept this strong field aside.
His victory was not just a flash in the pan. He delivered under pressure much to the delight of an almost packed house at Donnybrook on Sunday afternoon.
The Tiger Wheel & Tyre 1-Hour Endurance Race was a full-throttle frenzy!
The finishers were warmly applauded by the crowd, with thanks going to Tiger Wheel & Tyre for their support and enthusiasm. It was just an incredible day with a lot of motorsport spectators.
