HARARE yesterday hosted victory celebrations for the triumphant team that excelled at the recent National Youth Games.
Harare bagged 40 medals to finish first. The medals included 17 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Harare Miriam Chikukwa congratulated the athletes.
“I would like to thank God for this achievement. To our team, well done! I would also like to take this opportunity to commend the Provincial Education Director for harnessing resources for these Games.
“Today, we are celebrating our victory as Harare emerged the overall winner of the 12th edition of the games.
“I am calling upon all the youth to seize sport as an initiative to better their lives and create a source of income for themselves.
“I’ve seen some athletes and soccer players who are earning more than some of us, so I call upon everyone who is talented or passionate to take sports seriously as it can be a means of economic empowerment,” said Chikukwa.
The 12th edition of the Youth Games took place in Masvingo last month.
Chikukwa also highlighted how sport was important to the country.
“You know, sport is so powerful it can bridge any difference be it political, religious or even on social issues,” she said.
