Harare City Council plans to refurbish and install more than 500 street lights across the metropolitan area ahead of the Sadc Summit set for August this year.

This comes after President Mnangagwa challenged local authorities to step up in their quest to deliver services to residents.

In a full council meeting, it was revealed that there has been progress on the ground.

“We are targeting to refurbish the old street lights which were vandalised by notorious people and install over five hundred street lights ahead of the Sadc Summit” said Harare City Council Director of Electrical Services, Engineer Calvin Chigariro.

He said the council was now upgrading its lights to LEDs.

“In terms of power supply, we have moved away from individual solar units on top of each light, what we are now going to do as a city is to have solar farms.

“We experienced a lot of vandalism and it became unviable for us to have solar units installed on individual lights, so for now we are resolved to go for a grouped supply of renewable energy,” he said.
