HARARE Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has directed the city’s water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) committee to urgently develop interim solutions for the severe water shortages in Waterfalls, where residents have gone two months without supply.

The committee has been instructed to report its progress back to the full council.

Clr Mafume was responding to Ward 23 Hatfield Councillor Stanley Manyenga’s request for water in Waterfalls.

The mayor suggested that the WASH committee chair can allocate water bowsers immediately to the affected area.

“We appreciate all the areas that are having challenges with water and so forth and need stopgap measures. Let’s reconstitute the WASH committee,” he said.

“It must deal with those things and it can invite other councillors who have an interest to come into that committee,” he said.

“We do understand that as we institute this new operation in Harare water, there are going to be hardships for a while, but it’s all going to be good in the long term as we revamp our infrastructure for the first time, as you heard the town clerk saying.

“We are doing things that have not been done in many, many years and therefore require patience.”
