HARARE City have moved swiftly to secure the FC Hunters’ franchise in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, finalising a deal valued at US$600,000.
The agreement was reached despite Hunters previously placing their franchise value at more than US$1 million.
Several clubs showed interest, but the Marondera based Hunters eventually found common ground with Harare City.
Under the agreed terms, Harare City will integrate selected members of the Hunters executive into their structures and absorb seven players who were still under contract at Hunters.
The deal does not spell the end for the Hunters owners.
They are exploring ways to revive the club, either through entry into the Eastern Region Division 2 or by taking over Harare City’s current slot in the Northern Region Soccer League.
A source close to the negotiations told Zimpapers Sports Hub,
“The deal will be announced officially soon. I can confirm that the two clubs have agreed on principal terms.
“Chief amongst the negotiations, was the welfare of the players who still have running contracts with FC Hunters.
“Harare City is willing to incorporate the contracted players in their system as well as making part of the leadership part of their executive structures. Unlike other suitors to buy the franchise, Harare City was considerate of everyone involved and who was part of FC Hunters.”
Last year, MWOS acquired the ZPC Hwange franchise to make their topflight debut, and Harare City appear to have followed a similar path as they position themselves to make a statement at the highest level.
Harare City have failed to reclaim a topflight ticket since their relegation at the end of the 2022 season. Their return will restore the number of Harare based clubs in the league following Yadah’s relegation last season.
