A swarm of bees stung to death one person in the Harare Gardens on Sunday evening.
The City of Harare temporarily closed the park following the incident but has since confirmed that the park is now safe for public use following the tragic incident.
In a statement, the City Health Department’s Environmental Health – Pest Control Section, based at Beatrice Infectious Diseases Hospital, said the swarm of bees had taken shelter in a tree stump within the park.
“Unfortunately, one person was attacked and fatally injured before the City’s emergency response team was alerted and intervened,” reads the statement.
The department assured residents that the bees were safely and professionally removed and that all affected areas had been inspected and declared safe.
“Harare Gardens is now safe and open to the public. Normal activities may continue as usual,” the municipality said in the statement.
The City of Harare said it does not maintain bee colonies in its parks and described the incident as an isolated occurrence involving a transient swarm seeking temporary shelter.
It extended its condolences to the family of the unnamed victim and reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring public spaces to prevent similar occurrences.
Residents have been urged to continue enjoying Harare Gardens while remaining vigilant.
