Cash-strapped Harare City Council said it is engaging debt collectors to recover more than $8 billion owed by ratepayers.
Harare City Council, in a notice on its social media platforms, said the debt was choking its operations.
“Council is engaging debt collectors for difficult clients. This will enhance revenue collection and ensure all service consumers contribute towards service delivery. Council is owed more than $8 billion,” said the council.
City spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme said the council was targeting “problem debtors.”
He also said due to Covid-19 the council was battling the huge turnout of people paying rates.
“People should understand that in this Covid-19 era there is need of social distancing also with some employees testing positive to Covid-19 and the staff having been reduced to 40 percent, there is likely to be queues at our revenue halls,” he said.
