THOUSANDS of young people gathered at Lord Malvern High School grounds in Harare on Saturday to commemorate Munhumutapa Day, a celebration marked through sporting activities organised by ZANU PF Harare Province and Zimsports for ED in honour of President Mnangagwa, who will be turning 83 on Monday.
The main Munhumutapa Day celebrations are scheduled to be held in Zvishavane.
The Harare edition attracted wide participation, with teams drawn from the city’s six party zones.
Addressing the crowd, ZANU PF Harare province chairperson Cde Godwills Masimirembwa urged the youth to resist drug and substance abuse, describing sport as a positive alternative that fosters development.
“Our main objective is to ensure our youth are occupied by various activities that promote development,” he said.
“We want youth to take sports seriously and view it as a form of employment.”
He added that the commemorations were not only about sport but also about promoting unity, excellence and community engagement.
“Munhumutapa Day stands as a vibrant tribute to a living revolutionary icon whose leadership continues to inspire hope, progress and national pride,” said Cde Masimirembwa.
He also revealed that the commemorations would be used as a mobilisation platform to register more youths into the party.
The youth further celebrated President Mnangagwa’s infrastructure achievements, including the Trabablas Interchange, the expansion of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, the construction of the new Parliament building and the rehabilitation of Hwange Power Station, among others.
Speaking at the same event, Zimsports for ED chairperson Cde Gabriel Togarepi said the sporting extravaganza showcased Zimbabwe’s youth talent while celebrating the leadership of President Mnangagwa.
“We are commemorating the life of a true liberation hero and visionary leader who has spearheaded Zimbabwe’s transformation through massive infrastructure development,” he said.
The event was attended by senior ZANU PF Harare provincial leaders, including Cde Ephraim Fundukwa (vice chairperson), Cde Voyage Dambuza (political commissar), Cde Norbet Jinjika (secretary for administration), Cde Martin Mambo (secretary for finance) and Cde Spencer Machangara (vice chairperson for Youth Affairs), among others.
