HARARE’S FAKE JAMES BOND! Con artist pretends to be military intelligence officer…

B-Metro Reporter

A HARARE man who fancied himself a James Bond of Highlands has been arrested after pretending to be a military intelligence officer and even parading a camouflage blanket like a badge of honour.

Gerald Gumede (24) thought he could charm his way into free accommodation and upkeep by selling a blockbuster lie to an unsuspecting lecturer. Instead, the would-be spy is now trading fake missions for real prison bars after the Harare Magistrates Court convicted him for impersonating a public official and unlawful possession of military regalia.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Gumede pulled a long con that ran from September 2025 to January 2026.

The court heard that he “falsely represented himself to a local lecturer as a military intelligence officer in the Zimbabwe National Army, claiming that he was sourcing accommodation for Zimbabwe Defence Forces personnel and could facilitate recruitment into the ZDF through alleged contacts in the President’s Department.”

To spice up his story, Gumede collected the victim’s educational certificates and even took him on a joy ride to Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks, hoping the sight of real soldiers and real gates would seal the deal.

But the spy movie ended badly on 5 January when police searched his residence and found a Zimbabwe National Army camouflage blanket.

The State told the court that Gumede “acted with the intention of securing free accommodation and upkeep from the victim.”

In short, he wanted soft life on a hard lie.

The magistrate was not amused.

Gumede was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for impersonation, with six months suspended for five years. On the second count, he got six months, with three months suspended. He will serve an effective 21 months behind bars.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe came down hard on fake soldiers and bedroom commandos.
“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe condemns impersonation and unlawful military regalia and will prosecute all offenders without fear or favour.”

From fake intelligence to real consequences, Gumede can now testify that camouflage blankets do not make you a colonel and bluffing your way into free rent can land you in an orange uniform instead.
