Headmasters teach teachers

headmaster Mr Peter Mteliso, who has been with the school for the past 16 years, said teachers were shunning the area.
“Teachers are shunning this area because of its remoteness — only two teachers have stayed here long. Over 100 percent of the teachers here are Shona-speaking and they walk more than 10 kilometres to access shops and to get transport.
“Language barrier among teachers and pupils is a very big problem. Teachers          always refer to me if they don’t understand Shangani language because of my experience here.
“I usually conduct Shangani lessons and refresher courses with teachers for them to know the language and be able to teach pupils.
“Transport operators do not like plying this area because of landmines.
“They concentrate on areas they feel are safe, you know how it is with landmines,” he said.
Mr Mteliso said people continue to lose legs and  livestock to landmines that were in some cases swept away by floods.
“Many people are now disabled due to landmines.
“I recall a man who had gone hunting and stepped on a landmine. He bled to death in the minefield and was only discovered some days later.
“Zimbabwe National Army de-miners carried out landmine awareness campaigns, educating our children and there are no longer victims of landmines. Soldiers are helping us a lot here . . . they prepared us a football pitch and the pupils are enjoying soccer.
“Donors must come to the aid of this area so as to speed up removal of landmines because that is the only way investors would start coming to the area,” he added.
