THE headmistress at Chikumbiro Primary School in Gweru has been dragged to court for allegedly defrauding the school of more than $1,000.
Tariro Matongo, 49, the school head and Adolph Venancio Jerasi Fari Dube, 58, a former School Development Committee Chairperson appeared before Provincial Magistrate Phathekile Msipha who remanded them out of custody to Monday next week for continuation of trial.

Matongo is sister to expelled Zanu PF Secretary for Administration, Didymus Mutasa.

Prosecuting Kelvin Guveya told the court that on 28 January 2013 Matongo and Dube withdrew $1,295 from Chikumbiro Primary School’s FBC bank account to pay water bills at the Gweru City Council.

The duo allegedly failed to pay the bills and converted the money to their own use.

The court heard that the matter came to light after an audit by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.  Guveya said ministry officials called the two to explain the disparities but they failed to account for the money.

The matter was then reported to the police leading to the arrest of the two.

In November 2013 parents with children at Chikumbiro Primary School demonstrated against the headmistress Matongo accusing her of embezzling school funds.

Parents alleged that Matongo and her management had misappropriated $31,000.
