1. Positive thinking
The essence of any successful business person or athlete’s mental attitude is positive thinking. It is not always about how capable your body is, it is about the mind. The challenge is really a test of your mental toughness and your psychological preparedness. It’s very possible to improve your body to suit that body you have always wished to have. But the agent for this change is your mind. Your body is always an expression of your mind, the outer muscle is a reflection of the inner person. The mind controls the body, the slower the mind thinks the slower the body reacts. A splendid physique signifies willing power, determination, persistence, tenacity — all in all strength of character.
Most people fail before the experience. You must be positive above all. Just make up your mind not to live in a predominantly negative way. If you have got high expectations on success you will get success, but if you always expect to fail you will inevitably fail. Everyone is in control and responsible for his or her own destiny. We all feel negative at times but we need to learn from these negative experiences in life and apply them later in a positive approach and you will succeed. You have to think like a champion to be a champion. The crust of the matter is that all sports including exercising, especially at the highest levels is essentially a mind game. Those who are positively prepared will always win.
I believe there is always pain and struggle in life to achieve. So they say, no pain no gain. But don’t be scared of pain when exercising. Pain is an essential part of the body’s feed back system. And remember there are two kind of pain — constructive and destructive pain. Destructive pain occurs when you go too far and when you push that body past its breaking point. Know your limits, don’t get hurt and don’t get discouraged.
Constructive pain is good. It is the pain you need to feel when you are striving to get to the highest point. That burning sensation when you are doing those sit ups and that deep pain and trembling when you are struggling to rock that last rep. Constructive pain signifies that the body is being tried and tested. This kind of pain will result in improvement and growth and it reminds you that you are alive and capable. So for me, learning that I have the ability to be the best by eliminating fear and doubt and replacing them with positive mental attitudes is of utmost importance. The truth is that with positive thinking and approach on exercises one can do literally anything.
2. Visualisation
Visualisation is about having a picture in your subconscious mind. Some people say dreams can come true but for me the most important factor is to have that dream in the first place. This is a very essential technique by which you can positively programme your mind to propel yourself to reach your desired goals. People who have successfully reached their goals are the ones whose desire to succeed was so strong that they actually lived it. With a strong desire it is always easy to sit for hours to perfect your way through your dreams.
In a normal self motivation, one needs not to do anything more than creative state of mind to become a certain type of person you want to be. On visualisation I am talking about consciously and realistically self imagination of who you would like to become one day. Although this can sound weird to other people, for me I never stop dreaming.
Gradually make this image you want to be, more sharp and real by using your sense of sight and feel it until it is almost as if you are projecting a film in your subconscious mind. If you want to be a muscle builder like me, vividly start visualising every lump of muscle, every cut between muscle groups, the image of that six pack on your core and the protruding veins when your muscles are pumped.
When you want to lose that weight, start to visualise that splendid body, no hanging tummies, fitting in that one small size dress, having a tight back, fitting into those latest jeans. Actually, this feeling of what it would be like inside a great body and physique is crucial to optimum visualisation practice for the creation of goals and the attainment of results. And most importantly, psychologically you need self determination and belief to get a great deal more out of your visualisation. You need to be in a correct frame of mind to achieve.
3. Focus
I believe this is the ability to concentrate fully on your goals. No any other sort of mood must change or divert you from your daily routine. I have come across a lot of people cancelling their training sessions because a training partner has failed to turn up. But remember you are doing this for yourself. Focus means you will fulfill your session, come rain come thunder. Focus means punctuality, maintaining your training time every day. Normally when things are not going my way, raining always uplifts my spirit. So for me it is not a valid excuse not to train because you just don’t feel like or you had a bad night. Focus means total commitment.
When working out, one needs the highest level of focus and concentration. For you to feel and see the muscle you are working on, you need to concentrate. To avoid unnecessary injuries during exercising, you need to focus. Results may take long to come, but when you are focused, you won’t get discouraged.
So my friends keep focused, you will get there. Because focus is the key, focus is a vision of what is ahead of you before you get there. Focus, focus and focus, we will talk more on this next week.
God Bless.
