Health hazard looms as Victoria Falls runs dry

A health hazard is looming in Victoria Falls as the resort town has gone for more than a week without running water.
Residents have to endure the scorching summer heat with erratic water supplies as there is usually no running water.
Some schools have resorted to dismissing pupils early fearing a health hazard as toilets have no running water.
For the past week, taps have been dry during the day and water would only drip for a few minutes at night.

The local authority has attributed the development to a burst Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) pipe.
Victoria Falls public relations officer Ngqabutho Moyo said they had reported the burst water pipe to Zinwa and no action had been taken yet.
“The pipe burst but belongs to Zinwa. We’ve reported it to them and the situation is affecting residents,” he said referring further questions to the water authority.

Zinwa’s public relations manager Marjorie Munyonga was not immediately reachable for comment.
Residents said because of the erratic water supplies, they had resorted to filling containers at night and were relieving themselves in the bush.
“We’re in a terrible situation and we wonder what the problem is because it has never happened here before.

“We wonder why the council has no water when we’re just closer to Zambezi,” said a resident Mike Mlilo.
Another resident Morgan Dube said they were worried about the situation.

“Honestly, we’re worried by the latest developments but we can’t do anything because we didn’t get any official communication from the council on what the problem was,” he said.

“Residents have raised complaints and we hear the issue is being attended to. Water is essential especially this time of the year because of the heat and yesterday schools had to send children away before dismissal time for fear of a health hazard.

“We’re not saying pipes should not burst but at least the authorities should inform us.”
