The five hectic days have come and gone. I do not know whether to say the youth, once again, did not disappoint or to say that they disappointed as usual. It would be interesting to find out the figures on cane spirit sales in town, and I am willing to bet that most of the buyers were underaged! That is the excitement around Trade Fair for you, when many young people lose themselves and their innocence all in a day, purportedly to celebrate ZITF or just to keep up with the crowd as peer pressure takes over, shutting the brain and opening the heart dangerously.
What I noticed though was that even kindergarten is now joining the booze brigade.A Money that was supposed to go to Lunar Park ended up being harvested by the bars. I still argue that the earlier form of recreation kept quite a lot away from trouble during Trade Fair!
As helicopters were buzzing over Bulawayo to mark the start of Trade Fair, a decent chunk of the population was invading Gwandaas bushes in search of amacimbi.A The fires in the bushes made one think of street lights in town. I hear seasonal romance blossomed and some couples could be set for yet another harvest from the seed planted during the cold month of April while pursuing the worm. Interestingly the babies from the April romance would be born in yet another amacimbi season, December/January! I am not saying anything about children born in December guys, let us not even go there.
We generally love children and congratulate and even throw parties for those that are brave enough to carry a pregnancy for nine months and deliver safely.A We do not even bother what colour the baby is, babies are so cute, regardless of their race.A They are so easy to love, you have to have a serious demon to hate children, with all their innocence.A Not so when they grow up though as some people have shown recently. In Italy, Sulley Muntari endured racist taunts from an opposing sideas supporters until he said enough was enough and walked off the pitch. He has since earned praise from a United Nations human rights official. In the US, Adam Jones was also abused because of his skin colour during the week but appeared to sympathise with the sick spectators, slamming their bigotry. And by the way the first man was called Adam!A It would appear being good at what you do can be a curse in some areas, where people feel insufficient or mediocre, just by your sporting performance and seek to perforate your moment of glory by drawing attention and playing up racial differences to rob you of a proud moment.
I am an admirer of Trevoh Noah. Jokes aside, he once said something so profound it stuck.A We attach meaning to words, and on their own, the letters that form the words are nothing. He urged that we embrace even the seemingly negative and draw positive energy out of such. I remember him saying we could celebrate the word a?kaffira? since its original meaning was far from its connotations now.A Infact, he hazarded, we could give it some swag by using it more, like some hip-hop artistes or black Americans that took the sting out of nigga by using it more often to refer to one another.A I have heard people call each other nja yama (literally, my dog).A Donat get me wrong, the racial slurs are unforgivable and should be condemned strongly.A But since such sick people will always be with us, we need to remove the sting from their arsenal by owning the terms and embracing them by giving them a new and defiant meaning.
There are some things that are worth celebrating, while others call for exorcism of some sort.A Take for instance the financial status of one Zahara, who is reportedly three years behind in paying for a car. Zahara rhymes with mahala, and it would seem the melody queen did not read the fine print on the contract.A And to think that her father has prolonged the lobola negotiations leading to a delay to her planned wedding. At least now the hubby has an idea what he is wading into. Once married the process of debt takeover would be complete since the two become one!
Come on Zahara do not upset your married lifeas balance sheet, master your rand notes the way you master musical notes.
