HELLENIC ACADEMY retained the Milne Shield after edging Chisipite Senior School 3-2 in an absorbing final.
Amy Brooke was the Hellenic Knights hero as she scored a brace.
A total of 10 teams competed at the indoor hockey tournament at Chisipite, Harare last weekend.
Hellenic Knights coach Chris Fourie said: “Our toughest opponent at the tournament was Harare Convent. They were a fast and physical team; however we managed to win the game 4-1.”
In the final, Chisipite opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a good shot from a penalty corner by Courtney Lowe.
However, Hellenic equalised through Brooke in the 17th minute from a very well-directed, powerful penalty stroke.
They banged in another in the 19th minute of the game when a fantastic pass from the back by Taya Trivella found Kendal Revolta on the edge of the D.
Hellenic got their third in the 38th minute from a well taken shot from an on fire Brooke.
Chisipite fought back and pulled one back in the 40th minute through Jamie Viviers to set up an exciting finish.
On their way to the final Chisipite beat Convent A 5-2, hammered Arundel B 7-0 and walloped Hellenic B 9-0.
Meanwhile, the conclusion of the indoor season has seen schools starting preparations for field hockey with Fourie revealing the Knights were desperate to win the Golden Girls gong.
“We aim to replicate or better our thrid place position we attained in last year’s competition through hard work and humility,” he said.
The Golden Girls tournament has been held annually since 1981 in an attempt to recapture the glory days of Zimbabwean hockey marked by the gold medal won by the national women’s team at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
To commemorate that remarkable feat, the Golden Girls Trophy was presented by the City of Harare to the Zimbabwe Women’s Hockey Association and since then first team school hockey sides battle it out for the prestigious trophy and the bragging rights that come with it.
