Herald Senior Writer Sydney Kawadza yesterday won the second prize in the inaugural United Nations Media Award for Development Reporting in Harare, dominated by journalists from the Zimbabwe Newspapers stable.Kawadza’s five entries on various development stories across Zimbabwe were rated highly among 180 entries from 36 Zimbabwean journalists who participated in the contest.
Journalists from Zimpapers who were honoured at the ceremony yesterday were Robin Muchetu from Sunday News, Chronicle’s Thandeka Moyo and photographer Dennis Mudzamiri.
The UN in Zimbabwe initiated the Media Award for Best Development Reporting to encourage and recognise media coverage on national development issues and programmes in line with the Zimbabwe United Nations Development Assistance Framework priority areas.
The ZUNDAF is the United Nations strategic programme framework to support national development priorities as well as the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Aligned to the 2013-2018 Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation, the ZUNDAF incorporates principles of recovery and development anchored on seven national priority areas, namely; good governance for sustainable development, pro-poor sustainable growth and economic development, food security at household and national levels, sound management and use of the environment, access to and utilisation of quality basic social services for all, universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support and women’s empowerment, gender and equity.
