Prior to this decisive armed conflict which delivered independence on 18 April 1980, Zimbabwe had earlier fought the First Chimurenga/First Umvukela from 1896 to 1897. The war was prosecuted by some of the country’s bravest yet poorly armed cadres like Mbuya Nehanda, Sekuru Kaguvi, Mkwati, Mlimo, and Mashayamombe. Their bows and poisoned arrows and spears and shields, were not an answer to the settlers’ guns and dynamite.
The second phase of the liberation war was led by Zanla and Zipra forces fighting as the Patriotic Front. With improved expertise, guns, bombs and other contemporary military hardware to match the whites’ and crucially, overwhelming support by the masses, victory for the people was a forgone conclusion.
From time to time, Zimbabwe honours its heroes for their ultimate effort it making the country.
On 11 August 1989, the Government awarded Liberation Decoration and Liberation Silver Medals to 100 of its finest. Since the awards were made in 1989, the list published below may not be exhaustive. They cadres are:
