adminlunchtimes in the centre of Harare have been irrevocably changed during the Hifa Week as an eclectic mix of artistes from each year’s programme performs for free to all and sundry in Harare’s First Street Mall.
Dubbed the First Street Platform, Hifa has used this extra festival stage to put on free daily performances for the benefit of those either unable to afford a ticket or unable to leave work during the day.
Hifa organisers have promised the continuation of this concept which founder and artistic director Manuel Bagorro describes as being for the purpose of “igniting interest in the festival but also in the arts generally”.
“The First Street Platform is part of an effort to cultivate enthusiasm for the arts in an urban celebration for the broadest possible audience pool.”
Business will once again come to a standstill at the corner of First Street and George Silundika Avenue from the 1st to the 6th of May where the Platform will host different shows.
In previous years it has proved to be a hit with hundreds of onlookers keenly enjoying the potpourri of performances.
According to the organisers, the First Street Platform programme’s general matrix will follow the concept of drawing from all the festival’s genres so that the public can get as varied a taste of the festival’s programming as possible.
In the past, live music, dance, poetry recitals and circus acts have wowed the throngs at this platform.
