THIS Saturday, the heart of Bulawayo basketball shifts to Hartsfield Rugby Grounds, where a decisive showdown for leadership will unfold at the Bulawayo Basketball Association’s elective annual general meeting — a contest that could redefine the sport’s direction in the city.
The elections will be held at the Matabeleland Rugby Union Board Room at Hartsfield Rugby Grounds. The Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) will oversee the proceedings to ensure a smooth and transparent voting process.
Francis Dube, the outgoing Secretary General of the BBA, confirmed that all preparations have been finalised.
“All is set ahead of the elective AGM. We have put all measures in place to ensure the event is conducted smoothly. The Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) will be overseeing the entire voting process.
Besides the elections, the agenda for the day also includes the reading of reports from the previous minutes, the Secretary General’s report, and the financial report,” said Dube.
Dube, a respected and steady-handed administrator, has served two full terms and will not seek re-election. His departure leaves a significant leadership gap and opens the floor to new contenders.
Three candidates — Tinodaishe Gumbo, Charmaine Chirinda, and Portia Dube — are vying for the Secretary General post. Each brings a unique skill set and a shared passion for developing the game.
But the spotlight will be on the presidency.
Incumbent Sinda Mthandazo Mono is standing for another term. He faces stiff competition from two familiar names in local basketball: Tracy Phiri, a dynamic former player turned administrator, and Theodore Weale, a veteran coach known for his experience and deep involvement in the sport.
In the Competitions category, Weale will face Admire Chafa, Keith Chiposi, and Stanley T Chipwanyira.
For the Technical Commission, Andile Chirinda joins the race.
The Treasurer’s position will see Tanaka Masarirambi go head-to-head with Beatrice Nyoni, while the Marketing and Promotions portfolio features a contest between Maurice Mazhandu and Kudakwashe Sibanda.
The 3×3 basketball presidency is also up for grabs, with Farai Mapuvire and Sithabile Ngandini contesting the post.
Some positions are already settled. Simbarashe Musonza retains his seat as Athletes Commission President unopposed, as does Zanele Nzima, who continues as Women and Youth President.
The elections are expected to draw strong interest from stakeholders, clubs, and fans alike. With fresh names on the ballot and some big shoes to fill, this AGM could shape the future of Bulawayo basketball for years to come.
