CHAPUNGU Queens have become the team to beat in this year’s Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League, and their leadership is giving credit where it’s due.
After 12 matches, the Air Force of Zimbabwe-backed side sits at the summit of the log, riding high on a dominant run that’s seen them win 11 of those games.
“Being at the top of the log for this long is simply a testament to dedication, focus, and commitment. We give credit to both the players and the technical team for such a sterling job,” said club secretary Talent Chitsaka.
Chitsaka said the club is focused on taking each game as it comes, and will continue working hard to maintain momentum.
This weekend, the log leaders face one of their toughest assignments yet, an away clash against Black Rhinos Queens at The Heart Stadium on Saturday.
Chapungu’s only loss of the season came in Week 8 when they were narrowly edged 2–1 by Correctional Queens. Chitsaka described that defeat as a “learning curve” for the side, who’ve bounced back strongly since.
Herentals Queens, sitting second on the table, trail Chapungu by just two points. However, they were recently docked three points after losing a disciplinary case to Kwekwe United Queens. The sanction came after Herentals failed to provide a venue for their scheduled match in Harare back in April.
Correctional Queens are also level on 31 points with Herentals and remain in hot pursuit of the top spot as the race enters a critical stage.
Elsewhere, Highlanders Royals are set to take on Black Mambas Queens at Bulawayo Chiefs Village.
Black Mambas come into the game with renewed confidence after securing their first win of the season, a 2–1 victory over Faith Drive Academy in a midweek fixture at Mukushi Stadium.
