Highlanders royals fire blanks

Sikhumbuzo Moyo: Senior Sports Reporter
NEGLECTED Highlanders Royals continue to fire blanks in the National Football Association of Zimbabwe Southern Region Women’s Football League following their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of a supercharged Hwange Ladies side at the Colliery Stadium on Saturday.

It was the Royals’ second high scoring loss in three games, having lost the season’s opener 0-5 to Blackboots before benefiting through a technicality when Sobukhazi failed to pitch up, resulting in a 3-0 walkover score line.

However, the girls seem to be victims of neglect from the Cecilia Malunga-led interim committee. On their way to Hwange, the girls were made to sleep on the cold floor at Hlangabana Lounge and upon return just before midnight, they were again dumped at the club house and had to sleep on the same cold floor, despite freezing night temperatures in Bulawayo.

“We were told there was no fuel for the bus to deliver us. We came together with the Division One guys who were also not delivered, but taken to the Luveve House,” said one of the girls.

Nokel Security managing director Kenneth Mhlophe buys fuel for the Division One side Bosso 90.

On the field of play, the girls crumbled like a deck of cards as Hwange scored through Nomazulu Tshuma, a brace from Annalia Makhiyi and Merjury Shoko’s strike.

In other matches, Lee Mangena’s Street Set had their bubble burst in devastating fashion by fallen giants New Orleans, who clobbered them 4-0 with goals from double scorers Nobukhosi Ncube and Samkelisiwe Ndlovu.

Inline Academy were 3-0 winners over Magwegwe, while Hearts of Oak were beneficiaries of Sobukhazi’s failure to turn up for their match and were awarded a 3-0 walkover score line to go a point clear at the top of the table with seven points. Street Set slipped to fourth place, Inline Academy are second and Hwange Ladies third.
