‘Hilter’ football tweet triggers furore

KUALA Lumpur. — A Malaysian Member of Parliament triggered a furore in Malaysia on Wednesday after he tweeted “Long Live Hitler” shortly after Germany won their football World Cup semi-final against host nation Brazil. “Well done . . . Bravo . . . . Long Live Hitler,” Bung Mokhtar Radin, a federal parliamentarian from the eastern state of Sabah, tweeted after Germany humiliated Brazil 7-1.

Netizens lambasted Bung for his tweet calling it “insensitive” and “brainless.” But Bung, who is a fan of the German football team, was unrepentant.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with people sometimes. Hitler is part of history and the German team fought like how he did,” The Star Online newspaper quoted him as saying.

Lim Guan Eng, chief minister of the northern state of Penang, said that if Bung had said it in Germany, he could be jailed for supporting Nazism.
Lim urged Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to scold Bung, who is a member of the ruling coalition. — Sapa-dpa.
