HIPPO ATTACKS TWO VILLAGERS, SHOT DEAD

A HIPPO attacked two villagers at Charuma homestead, Netsaringoma Village, under Chief Chamutsa, in Buhera.

Tawanda Charuma (38) and Elvis Charuma, both residents of the same homestead, were injured in the attack on January 26.

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the attack.

He said the injured men are receiving medical attention.

Ass-Insp Chinyoka said the incident occurred at around 5:45am.

The hippo was spotted resting behind a cattle kraal at the Charuma homestead.

News of the unusual sighting quickly spread, attracting several villagers who gathered at the homestead and began taking photographs of the hippo.

However, the hippo suddenly charged towards the crowd.

While several people managed to flee, Charuma was attacked and sustained injuries to the stomach and buttocks.

He was rushed to Birchenough Bridge Hospital, where he was admitted and is reported to be in a stable condition.

The incident was reported at ZRP Nyanyadzi and officers from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority were also alerted.

The authorities shot and killed the hippo.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The police have urged members of the public to promptly report sightings of dangerous animals to the relevant authorities.
