Hockey teams resume camp

THE Zimbabwe Hockey Under-17 boys and girls teams resumed camp yesterday in preparations for the Youth Olympic Qualifiers set for Zambia early next month. The teams started their first practise session after the festive season break at Chisipite High School in Harare yesterday.

Girls are coached by Looks Lowe who is assisted by Anthony Five while Prince Mwale is in charge of the boys. The Mwale-coached boys have been trimmed to 18 from a provisional squad of 28.

The girls are still unchanged from the squad that faced Zambia in a friendly match in December. In an interview yesterday Mwale expressed satisfaction with the boys after the festive holiday, which tends to affect most athletes.

“The individual holiday programme seemed to have worked well for the boys. I’m happy they came back in shape, we just have to continue were we left,” said Mwale.

The teams are set to break camp when schools open but Mwale said that won’t affect their preparations.
“Those in Bulawayo will be doing their practice there, same for those in Hippo Valley, The main team is here in Harare so we won’t be affected much,” he said.

He said when schools open they will have at least two squad weekends before the tournament.
