KADOMA-BASED arts promoter, philanthropist and miner Kosmas Daka, known affectionately as Cossy Rules, says his priority is to take care of the underprivileged in his community.
Rather than indulging in personal luxuries, he chooses to invest his resources in transforming the lives of those in need.
Celebrating his 44th birthday at the weekend at Jairos Jiri Kadoma, Daka continued his decade-long tradition of supporting orphans, focusing on particularly vulnerable groups including blind children, those with albinism, and individuals who are wheelchair-bound.
Veteran lyricist Leonard “Karikoga” Zhakata, Peter Moyo and Star FM newsreader and presenter Milton “Dee-Knife” Nyabanga graced the event, where they interacted with children at the centre.
“Growing up as a young man, there were several people who assisted me in reaching where I am today, including my parents.
“At one point in my life, we used to showcase many luxuries during our birthdays but, for the past decade, I have chosen Jairos Jiri Kadoma as the venue for my celebrations.
“This is something I have been doing for the past 10 years because I see value in giving back to others and ensuring we change lives.
“I feel blessed to do this every year since the kids have testimonies about the good work we are doing.
“We really value the vulnerable who need equal opportunities. I will continue doing this to ensure we change many lives.”
He added:
“I am in love with my community of Kadoma, which has the potential to excel and shine beyond expectations.
“I always play my part whenever we engage with the school authorities. I don’t wait for my birthday, I am constantly in touch with the school headmaster, who guides us on where there is a crisis or what they urgently need.”
He said he has a special relationship with Zhakata.
“If you have noticed, Zhakata has always been one of the people who have supported me for years.
“A church bishop in his own right, Zhakata is also an advocate for philanthropic work and engaging people of his calibre is something I will always cherish.
“As for Peter Moyo, I consider him a family friend and a son since I was very close to his father, who used to support my initiatives.”
Cossy Rules said there was a lot of talent at Jairos Jiri centres.
“If you have noticed, we have equally talented artists here at Jairos Jiri and we will continue to help them record their music and ensure they are self-reliant.”
Jairos Jiri Kadoma High School’s acting headmaster, Tawanda Chapwanya, was blown away by the gesture shown by Cossy Rules.
“I have known him for many years and he has been doing this for the community of Kadoma, including helping the elderly.
“At this school, we feel blessed to have him as one of the benefactors who genuinely supports the vulnerable and less privileged. He brought a cheer to the learners as well as food to enhance their diet, which is a plus for us.”
He added:
“If we had ten people of his calibre in Kadoma, surely our town would see a huge difference.
“He has made a mark for himself and we are proud to be associated with him.
“Such memories stay in people’s hearts and Cossy Rules will always be remembered for the good deeds he has done for us and the community.
“The kids were happy, and this has come as an early Christmas present for most of them who are learning here at this school, which continues to produce stars,” he emphasised.
