A BULAWAYO taxi driver became the latest victim of a honey trap hijack when a late-night trip turned into a terrifying armed robbery on May 18, 2025.
The 30-year-old driver, who operates under InDrive services and resides in Morningside, was called around 4AM by a seemingly harmless female client requesting a ride from Palace Hotel to the leafy Suburbs area.
But what looked like a routine trip quickly turned into a nightmare.
Upon reaching Park Road in the Suburbs, the woman asked to be dropped off, only for three knife-wielding men to suddenly pounce from the shadows. Armed with okapi knives, they flung open the car doors and threatened to kill the driver if he dared scream.
The thugs ransacked the vehicle, making off with a Huawei P40 cellphone, a bag, $90 in cash, a modulator, and 5 litres of engine oil. The total value of the loot was pegged at US$220. The gang vanished into the night, and nothing has been recovered so far.
Police have since launched a manhunt.
“Taxi drivers have become targets for these scheming criminals. We urge them to be cautious with who they pick up, especially at odd hours. Trackers are highly recommended,” said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele.
Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing the suspects to book.
