As one of the ladies that were outstanding during the Women’s Day ceremony on March 8, Hope Masike continues in the celebratory mood as she commemorates female mbira stars, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe, the late Chiwoniso Maraire and Tete Joyce Warikandwa through a concert dubbed Gwenyambirakadzi.
The concert will take place at Jazz 24 /7 tonight.
In addition to her music, Hope will play some hit songs from the three great women who made a mark with their mbira songs.
“The concert is a way of honouring and saluting the greats whose works shaped a lot of artistes of today,” said Masike.
Masike said their greatness have inspired her to take over from their styles.
“They are such a huge inspiration to me and this will be one of the best mbira concerts,” she said.
With her regular shows at Jameson Hotel, her camp says they are promising a spectacular show of traditional music.
“Gwenyambirakadzi Concert is Hope’s own way of shining new light on the great women of mbira and giants of our musical past,” said Masike’s manager Lucky Muzava.
Masike has partnered with Radio Zimbabwe, DSTV, Tecno Mobile and Onsdale Enterprises popularly known as Farai Family Products for the show.
“Many academic books we read say historically women were not allowed to play mbira.
Some women had to sacrifice certain comforts and challenge societal expectations in order for all women to able to freely play mbira hence we must celebrate them,” said Muzava.
