HOT WATER HORROR. . . Mentally unstable woman scalds maid in Emganwini

A BULAWAYO maid is nursing horrific burns after she was doused with boiling water in what witnesses have described as a shocking, unprovoked attack.

The suspect, 38-year-old Priviledge Moyo of Emganwini suburb, allegedly carried out the violent act on 28 August, leaving the victim, Bethia Moyo, with severe burns to her face and chest.

Priviledge, who is said to be mentally unstable, appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Archie Wochiwunga, facing charges of physical abuse. She was remanded in custody to 17 September, pending a psychiatric evaluation to determine her mental state at the time of the attack.

According to prosecutor Audrey Kufandikanwe, Bethia works as a maid at the house where the incident occurred.

The accused is the sister of Bethia’s employer and was visiting the home on the day of the assault.

The court heard that Bethia was carrying out her chores when Priviledge suddenly went into the kitchen, fetched a pot of boiling water, and, without warning, poured it over Bethia’s face and chest.

“The attack was completely unprovoked,” said Kufandikanwe. “There had been no quarrel or argument between the two.”

Bethia’s screams drew the attention of neighbours, who rushed to the scene. She was immediately taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH), where she remains admitted and under close medical supervision.

Following the attack, police were called, and Priviledge was arrested at the scene.

Magistrate Wochiwunga ordered that Priviledge undergo examination by two doctors to confirm her mental state before the court can proceed.

Meanwhile, Bethia’s family has appealed for prayers and support as she battles to recover from her injuries.
The case has highlighted the urgent need for families to seek proper care and supervision for mentally ill relatives to prevent similar tragedies.
