A rise in economic activity, driven primarily by the power generation sector, is transforming Hwange into a bustling hub of construction, with massive housing developments and a surge in retail investment reshaping the town’s landscape.
The Hwange Local Board has reported an unprecedented wave of residential projects, spearheaded by key corporate players and Government, signaling a new era of urban growth for the coal-mining town.
Hwange Local Board Town Secretary, Mr Ndumiso Mdlalose, confirmed the rapid expansion, detailing several landmark projects.
“Housing development has been one of the most visible indicators of Hwange’s rapid transformation.
Power generation companies, notably the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and Hwange Electricity Supply Company (HESCO), have spearheaded major housing projects, with 680 new properties already contributing to Council revenue through property taxes and fees,” said Mr Mdlalose.
He provided a detailed breakdown, noting that 49 out of 74 houses at Baobab Hill are now occupied, while 537 properties are under development at Empumalanga.
Furthermore, ZPC has completed 20 houses at Don Bosco and 49 units at Empumalanga Phase 4.
This corporate drive is being complemented by significant public and private sector investment.
“The Ministry of Housing and Social Amenities is servicing over 2 000 stands at Empumalanga West, while FBC Building Society has commenced work on 764 housing stands and a high-rise flat stand,” he said.
