How to save on transportation costs

COMMUTING to the Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding industrial and commercial areas in Harare can be costly for many residents. There are several strategies that can help reduce transportation expenses, making commuting more affordable.

Use public transportation wisely

Harare’s public transport system includes buses and commuter omnibuses (kombis).

While public transportation is generally more affordable than driving, prices can still add up, especially for daily commuters.

Taking advantage of off-peak hours, when fares might be lower, can lead to savings.

Carpooling

Carpooling with colleagues or neighbours who work in the same area is an excellent way of cutting transportation costs.

By sharing fuel and parking costs, carpooling can significantly reduce commuting expenses.  It also has the added benefit of reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact. Residents can coordinate the activity through neighbourhood groups, social media or dedicated carpooling apps.

Cycling or walking

For those who live relatively close to the CBD or industrial areas, cycling or walking can be a cost-effective alternative.

Not only does this eliminate transportation costs, but it also provides health benefits through regular physical activity.

Harare’s mild climate makes cycling and walking feasible for much of the year, though it is essential to consider safety, especially in high-traffic areas.

Plan routes and combine errands

Residents should plan their routes and errands to minimise unnecessary trips.

Combining multiple errands into one trip can save both time and money, reducing the need for additional commutes.

Utilise shuttle services

Many companies in Harare offer shuttle services for their employees.

If your employer provides this service, it can be a cost-effective and convenient alternative to using public transportation or driving.

In cases where the firm does not offer such services, employees can collectively negotiate with their employer to introduce a shuttle service, particularly if a significant number of workers commute from similar areas.

Optimise fuel consumption  for personal vehicles

For those who drive to work, optimising fuel consumption can lead to significant savings.

Regular vehicle maintenance, such as ensuring tyres are properly inflated and the engine is well-tuned, can improve fuel efficiency. Additionally, driving habits like avoiding rapid acceleration, maintaining a steady speed and minimising idling can help save fuel.
