How to design your dream garden

Andrew Mangwarara

THIS week, we are highlighting Walter Costa’s beautiful garden in Hillside.

Discover how he has crafted a serene landscape, which has become his favourite place for relaxation and work.

What elements contribute to such a tranquil space?

Let us explore the importance of repetition and variety in garden design. By using similar plants but varying their height and placement, you can create a peaceful atmosphere. Additionally, consider the scale and proportion of garden elements. Ensure that the various components are appropriately sized for the available space.

Another crucial aspect is form and function. A well-designed garden should not only be visually appealing but also serve its intended purpose. Think about the specific needs of the garden users, such as pathways, barbecue areas or swimming pools.

A garden is never created out of context; always consider the surrounding natural features and use them to achieve a harmonious landscape that blends with the hills, rivers and climate of the geographical area.

This is in line with global trends of preserving the natural biodiversity of an area. Doing so helps to sustain natural populations of native species.

To gain inspiration and ensure the garden appeals to others, seek input from colleagues and partners.  Their perspectives can help tailor the design to meet the needs of potential users. Experiment with variety in plant shapes, colours, structures, furniture and accessories. Keep what works and adapt the rest.

Create a sense of contrast and dynamism by incorporating different shapes and sizes. Consider using asymmetrical, irregular, triangular and angular elements.

Harmony and unity are essential in any gardening project. Strive for a cohesive design that you can truly enjoy.

By incorporating the elements that we have discussed above — repetition, variety, scale, proportion, form, function, collaboration and creativity — you can create a beautiful and functional garden that is both visually appealing and practical.
