How to wear jeans with suit jacket

Wearing a suit jacket and denim jeans is very common these days.

It is usually a go-for look when one thinks of smart casual dressing and it dates back to the late ’50s into the ’60s when men would wear some nice flared corduroy trousers in different colours and wide lapel, patch pockets blazer which looked really stylish in the rock and roll days.

But then, men lost the touch over the years.

Fast forward to 2021, the first rookie mistake most men make is taking the only formal suit they have and changing the jacket into a sports coat to pair it with jeans.

The problem in doing so is in the long run, your jacket and your trousers will age differently, so much so that when you pair the jacket and the trousers together they will look as though you have mix the two.

Bear in mind that you are dressing down the jacket not dressing up the trousers so your look has to be more formal than casual, the top half controls the tempo for the bottom half.

How then do we achieve this?

Avoid using a suit jacket

For the same reason mentioned above, your suit will never be the same again and it’s not worth sacrificing your it for this outfit.

Suit jackets are cut different from blazers and sport coats, they have different silhouette and materials so in most cases formal jackets only look good in formal wear whereas sport coats and blazers are made for this purpose.

Wear blazers or sport coats

Blazers and sportscoats are usually unstructured, have soft shoulders, unlined and sometimes with patch pockets unlike suit jackets that have defined silhouettes to broaden your shoulders and narrow your waistline.

Due to sport coats being unstructured they lean towards the casual side than formal hence they look more flattering in jeans and chinos than in suit trousers.

Always opt for natural materials

Natural materials like tweeds, linen, cotton are breathable, comfortable, functional and they are less restrictive.

Try playing around with colours and patterns to create a contrast between the jacket and the jeans .

No baggy, skinny or damaged jeans

Denim jeans and jacket is a smart casual outfit, baggy and skinny jeans will defeat the whole purpose of a smart casual look. Straight cut or slimfit jeans have a flattering silhouette that compliments your body.

Remember you are dressing down the jacket so damaged/ripped jeans will do you a disservice. You have to wear the right length for you, if the jeans are too long you cuff them once or twice or you can just take them to your favourite tailor for alteration.

The right length

The easiest way to pull off this outfit is to wear dark blue denims then evolve to other colours like black, sky blue and many other colours over time.

Dark blue denim can go well with literally anything, you can wear them with white sneakers, brown or black shoes with a tucked in pattern shirt, polo or crew neck t-shirt. Sport coats and blazers are usually cut shorter than suit jackets, however, it is important to note that your jacket should not be too long, it should not cover your full backside but should cut through the middle to allow the jean back pockets to be reviewed.

With that being said, most jeans have a higher crotch than suit trousers so if the jackets becomes too long, it does not look nice when someone is looking at you from the back. It will appear as if you are wearing a dress top.
