Harare City striker Francisco Zekumbawire slipped out of the country early yesterday morning for a two week trial with huge spending Tanzanian giants Azam with his handlers also indicating an interest from another top side, Raja Casablanca of Morocco. The big Zekumbawire will make history if he makes the grade in Morocco, of becoming the first ever Zimbabwean player to play in the Botola, the North African country’s top league.
While Zekumbawire’s agent, George Deda confirmed both possibilities, Harare City spokesman Hope Chizuzu seemed to be aware of the Azam arrangement which Chronicle Sport understands is as good as done.
“The boy flew aboard a South African Airways flight this morning enroute to Tanzania for some trials and after that we expect him to catch another flight and head for North Africa where Raja Casablanca are waiting for him,” said Deda, speaking from Tunisia yesterday.
Chizuzu though said the former Zim Leopards and Hwange hitman was only going to Azam for a two week trial period. “What we know is that he went to Tanzania for trials with Azam over two weeks,” said Chizuzu.
He said they have always had an open door policy for their players to leave whenever an apportunity arises. “No figures have been thrown yet, but we are more than eager for him to strike a deal and move on where naturally he will get a better life for himself ,” said Chizuzu.
While the official line is that the player has gone for trials, sources close to him said that Azam bought an air ticket whose return is mid November. “He is coming back in November according to his ticket which ironically coincides with the Tanzanian league’s break. It’s clear therefore that it’s a done deal because these Azam guys have their scouts in Zimbabwe who give them technical advice on players,” said the source.
At Azam, Zekumbawire will play alongside former Highlanders player Bruce Kangwa.
